Question: What is a Mechanism?

Answer:
A mechanism is a device that changes motion, transmits power or force, or controls motion, power or force.  A mechanism enables an object, or parts of an object, to move in a prescribed way.  A mechanism may consist of one or more simple machines that work together to perform functions or tasks.

Question: What is motion?

Answer:
Motion is defined as the change of position of a body as time passes.

Question: How does a mechanism affect force and motion?

Answer:
A mechanism may: a) magnify the force to make it larger; b) decrease the magnitude of a force to make it smaller; c) transmit a force from one part to another with no change in the magnitude of the force; and d) change the direction of a force.

Question: What is friction?

Answer:
Friction is a force that exists between two surfaces that are in contact with each other.  Friction resists motion between the two surfaces.
